Northern Nuts Project is based in Finland, above 60°N. Our aim is to widen the selection of nut trees for Northern climates, corresponding to USDA Hardiness Zones 3–4(5). We are searching for winter-hardy and productive: □ Hazelnuts (Corylus) □ Walnuts (Juglans) □ Hickories & Hicans (Carya) □ Chestnuts (Castanea) □ Pines (Pinus) □ Oaks (Quercus) Some of the findings we are trialling at the moment include: □ Lateral-bearing precocious walnuts from Belarus, hardy to –30°C □ Heartnut cultivars bred in Atlantic Canada □ Hazelnuts from the former Soviet and Chinese breeding programs Please contact us by email if you know interesting clones we should try out: [email protected] The project is led by the Finnish National Arboretum Mustila (www.mustila.fi) |
